Natural Reservations in Mehedinti
The Bahna-Ilovita Paleontologist Reservation
Bahna-Ilovita reservation of fossilized coral and bryozoa limestone, and remains of gastropods is located on the Bahna village - Orsova mountainside, 4 km far from the national road E70. Among the richest in fossils in Romania and in Eastern Europe, this reservation is of high scientific interest for paleontologits.
This area is also home of more than 100 rare plant species (spread on 300 hectares between Gura Vaii and Varciorova).
Ponicova Cave
Ponicova Cave is located in the area of "The Iron Gates I" lake, on the narrow path of Cazanele Mari, 1 km from Dubova.
It is the biggest cave in the Danube Gorge area. It has many galleries, among which the Bats gallery, over 100m long and 30m high. The hike into the cave passes through the "Ciucarul Mare" Plateau (318 m high),
a point of attraction for tourists who want to have a spectacular view over the Danube.
The cave can be visited either individually or in organized groups.
Caving in organized groups is performed exclusively in the company of guides and instructors. Adventure Tour - S.C. Speo-Alpin Experience SRL offers group tours to Ponicova cave.
